obama a boost after this week's debate? i'm sure he's going to turn it that way. >> reporter: you know what, laura, looking at these numbers, i think you can call these an october surprise. this is what politicians hope and dream will happen. this is certainly an interesting turn of events here. we got the numbers we expected. let's look at them. expected 115,000, we got 114,000. that's not a barn burner. but the 7.8%, that is a drop from 8.1 to 7.8% unemployment. that is the lowest since the day president obama took office. that gives the president a chance to argue today that he has been slowly but steadily rebuilding on the economy. mitt romney, meanwhile, will have the opportunity to say the president hasn't been doing it enough, hasn't been doing it well enough and he could do it better. but this is a surprising number. the reason we have the sudden drop, we expected it to particular up a point. the reason it went down is because the july and august numbers have been revised upward pretty dramatically. we're talking about more than 80,000 jobs combined. it's not a great jobs numbe

president. this is part of a two-day swing through california in the final weeks of the campaign. president obama an his republican challenger, mitt romney, raising money aimed at ads in competitive states like ohio. in los angeles, president obama poked fun at his own lackluster debate performance. there, though, he got help from celebrities like george clooney and jon bon jovi at just one event there. took in about $3.75 million. this morning, though, the president will actually be near bakersfield first to stal the cesar chavez national monument. he was the founder of the united farm workers union. some see that as long overdue. others see it as an appeal to hispanic voters who were critical to president obama's campaign in 2008. today, though, on tap for mr. obama, he arrives at sfo at 1:40 this afternoon. from there it is a private fund-raiser that is scheduled at 4:00 at the intercontinental hotel here in san francisco. at 5:00, a private dinner followed by that concert reception here at the bill graham civic auditorium with musicians john legend and meek al fronte. he spen

campaign. >> nine background statement states. here they are. one of them we have moved into the obama category. but we have polled in all of them over the last couple of weeks. the president has leads ranging anywhere from two to eight points. but what was interesting, we asked a few other questions. including job approval rating, romney favorability, and who wins on the economy. in three states, the president had a job approval rating of 49 or above. romney's unfavorable rating was higher than his favorable rating, and the president led romney on the economy. in three of those stays, iowa, ohio, new hampshire. just one state did you have the president's job approval rating 48% or over and romney winning on the issue of the economy. that's north carolina. if you look at it that way and go to the map to 270, what does that mean, and you put those four states into the respective categories, and look at. this the president for suur sho. romney a long way to go has to sweep the rest. there are five left in the background. florida, virginia, wisconsin, colorado, nevada. this is where if ro
